Quest for the Gold

I don't own a television, which has hampered my viewing of the Vancouver Olympics. Even with t.v. access, I wouldn't be understanding much as the commentary is done in Chinese. I did manage to catch two Olympic events while at the gym: the highly anticipated showdown in men's and women's curling--China versus Sweden.

The other day I was sharing with my students my frustration in not being able to watch the Olympics. As were were discussing the events, a fervor arose in the classroom when the women's figure skating event was broached. My South Korean students gleefully talked about Kim Yu-Na, a national hero, while my Japanese student tried to make a case for Mao Asada. There we were. Americans, South Koreans, Japanese and Taiwanese sports fans talking, laughing and campaigning for our favorite athletes. A delightful diversion from English and a new perspective on sportsmanship.
