When Literature Speaks

This fall, my students and I have been studying The Crucible by Arthur Miller. I confess this is my first tango with any of Miller’s works. Having an interest in history and literature, The Crucible is a gem and the interest my students have shown has only made it all the more exciting. The regular class studied it first quarter, and now my honors students have begun to tackle it. Don’t worry, I won’t spoil the ending in case you’ve never read it. As we worked through the climactic points today, I was delighted to hear them gasp at the irony and catastrophe that befell the main characters. It truly is a joy to see them WANT to engage with literary works and on their own discuss getting together outside of school to read the play! Thank you, Arthur Miller.

Addendum: Thursday, one of my students stopped me in the hall and confessed that he read all of Act Four the night before. He just couldn't put it down! HOORAY! :)
