Last year, I spent Thanksgiving at a Burger King at the Peak in Hong Kong. Tomorrow, I’ll spend part of my Thanksgiving at work. To most of my students, Thanksgiving holds no meaning. To me, it obviously holds memories of family get togethers and traditions, but I guess as I get older and the more Thanksgivings I spend away from my family and now from my home country, I realize truly how Thanksgiving or the idea behind the word is a state of mind and heart. For what am I thankful? A great many things, some of which cannot merely be written about in words, or even tackled. Again and again I’m reminded that every day I need to wake with a spirit of thanksgiving and carry it with me throughout my day. My dad would often sing the hymn “Count your blessings” when my sisters and I weren’t doing so, but those words are a good reminder. Each day, not just on a formal holiday, I need to count my blessings and name them one by one.
So, I’ll start the list with a nod to some of Paul’s wording; I am thankful for you and the encouragement you provide me.
