It seems like every day I realize the limits of my vocabulary. Today was another one of those days. I went in to a different Vanguard than the one I normally frequent. I couldn't find the pet supply section. Hmmm. This was my internal dialogue.
Me: Well, how am I going to say this?
Me 2: You know the word for "cat" and you know the word for "stuff".
Me: Okay, so I could say "cat stuff" and hope they get the idea I want pet supplies.
Me 2: Sounds like a plan.
Me (to the Vanguard employee): Ma fan ni? Mao dongxi.
Vanguard employee: (blank stare)
Me: (internal thought) Great. Maybe I need to pantomime something? How do you pantomime cat litter?
Where is my translation book when I need it?
