Serving amidst giggles

Giggles and calisthenics consumed my morning as our students left the school building and embraced a day of service within the local community. I joined the seniors as they spent the morning with local children who attend an autistic preschool. Many of the seniors were surprised to see how “normal” several of the children were and commented on their willingness to engage with strangers. Two gregarious and lively boys captured their attention, but it was also those who were timid and shy who stole hearts.

As I watched our students engage with the preschoolers, a variety of thoughts entered my mind:
-how amazing it is that our school extends such opportunities to the students
-it’s a delight to see high schoolers speak the native language of those they are serving
-how beautiful children are, no matter what society might say
-how encouraging it is to see children overcome their disabilities and laugh, giggle, play and sing
-being able to see true and genuine concern from the staff serving the children
-realizing that everyone is a valuable member of society, no matter what some might think
-Being given more by the people you intended to serve

I am thankful for so much, especially the giggles of our little friends.
