A Confluence of Ideas

Literature moves me, as does art, music and history. Words and images hold grand amounts of power, that in the moment of their creation I wonder if the artist truly feels their depth.

Lately I find myself fascinated by literature and other pieces of art dealing with oppression. It might sound paradoxical to say that reading about oppression is gripping. How could something created in a dark moment of life be so engaging and riveting? Frankly, the mere resolve of the individual creating that specific piece of art is amazing. The raw and unedited emotion encapsulated in that moment transcends time. It’s mind boggling how words, which have been around for ages, can hit you in your gut or heart and move you to an emotional response you might not expect.

I can never understand the oppression, despair, and fear those living in slavery or the Holocaust felt, nor can I understand how man could turn on man in such evil ways. Yet, the works from these eras remind me of the tenacious spirit of man, and I am thankful for those individuals who, in their bravery and honesty, let me in to a corner of history, especially their history.
