The Not So 10K

“The more I run, the more I want to run, and the more I live a life conditioned and influenced and fashioned by my running. And the more I run, the more certain I am that I am heading for my real goal: to become the person I am.” George Sheehan, M.D.

I used to love running. Well, I take that back. I hated it when I started, and then my body began to enjoy it and almost crave it. If I didn't run, something seemed "off". Then stress hit, and it cannibalized my zest for running. Enter the Pride in Beijing Fun Run last weekend. Looking for a jolt of life in my running pursuits, I embraced the 10K. If you read Aesop's Fables as a kid, I am the tortoise. Slow and steady wins the race, or simply finishes the race if we're talking about my running career. My only goal: finish.

A gorgeous fall day greeted us in Beijing, and even as my shins burned and I was being left in the dust by the other runners, I didn't care. Finally, the halfway point was in sight, and then came the 7k marker. Just 3ks left! Oh so manageable because at this point I finally hit my stride. Well, with no other runners around and only a 5k sign pointing the way, I kept going straight. Hmmm, no other runners. Now, granted I was in the back of the competition for quite some time. Finally, the straightaway merged with another intersection, which was spilling runners onto the street, and a 9K sign looked straight at me. CLEARLY I missed a turn, but managed to reach a personal best for a 10K...or maybe it was only an 8.5K. :)
