This morning I woke up to find out that the water main for my apartment building had broken. No big deal as I found out it was getting fixed some time today. When I came back from some morning errands, I found what appeared to be a maintenance truck, two repair guys, and a small crowd at the entrance to our stairwell. As I'm walking up, an older gentleman starts talking to me in Mandarin. I just smile and nod and keep going, but he's very emphatic about what he's saying. I realized he was saying something about water as that was the only word I could recognize. Hmm, how do I let him know that there's no water in my apartment either? Exactly what does that look like in charades? I think he caught on and I went on my merry way. As I was fixing lunch, I heard a knock on the door and found my friend from downstairs and his granddaughter. Again I think he was saying something about "no water" but I just let him come in and see that my kitchen faucet wasn't working. He continued to talk and point. I "think" he said that they lived below me (I caught the charade for sleep) and that there was a bucket of water at the stairwell if I needed some, but I don't know that I'd put a wager on that. :)
Bad news--no water
Good news--A neighbor that's looking out for the foreigner
